Glad to hear your take on it.
"V" was one of the first things I ever watched on television -- my family got our first TV the year it came out.
My parents were big fans of Dr. Who and would routinely borrow a neighbour's tiny portable black-'n'-white to watch it, despite the fact that the show terrified my sister to the point of tears almost every time (the whole thing is kind of weird given the overtly religious nature of our household… people are strange). I can still freak her out with a properly modulated "Exterminate!"
When Dr. Who was on, I usually went out to the shop and worked on something, or absconded to play with Legos, so while it's technically the first show I ever watched (and a classic Trek Marathon at a Christmas party is the second), Who barely rated. I blame Tom Baker's silly scarf.
Anyway, "V" was a major topic of conversation with my friends at school, so I watched it to be able to participate in that. I was pretty neutral on the show, although I liked the concept quite a bit. The aliens were pretty innovative at the time, at least if you hadn't read a lot of scifi (I hadn't back then, outside of Heinlein's YA stuff).
The big finale really irked my mother, then a graduate science student. To prevent potential remake spoilers for the young-uns: her particular field of education made the deus ex machina particularly incredible to her. I thought it was a little trite, thanks to a particular radio show I'd heard about. Even so, as a child I thought the (very brief) bit with the hot air balloon as a weapon delivery vehicle was awesome.
